O Captain – Ghetto Hikes

Ghetto Hikes is the first EP from Yorkshire four-piece O Captain. The lo-fi, treble heavy introduction to Ghetto Hikes set my bar pretty low. However, literally 21 seconds in, and as soon as the rest of the band came in I knew I was wrong.

Opening track ‘Summer Party Jam’ instantly reminds me of Above Them or Midday Committee. ‘The Union’ is an entirely different animal though, an indie song similar to Death and the Penguin, with an outstanding interlude halfway through, showcasing the band’s math rock influences a la Rooftops or Colour.

Unfortunately, final track ‘A New Year’ falls a bit short; another indie song which seems to go nowhere, so the EP just peters out. However, I’ve found an acoustic version on their Facebook page, which is brilliant so I’m reluctant to be harsh. Currently available for whatever you want to pay on their Bandcamp, download it now, it’s worth a listen.
